Reflections from a Year at Project Kindred

Starting as a first-year counselor last year, Darryl has since taken on significant leadership roles at Project Kindred, including directing Family Camp this year. His journey demonstrates the opportunities for growth and leadership that Kindred provides young people and staff alike.

One of the most remarkable transformations that Darryl observed is how campers of all ages have grown in maturity. He said that over the past year, it’s been inspiring to see them develop the ability to handle various situations with poise and a sense of responsibility. It’s clear that campers have built a belief in Project Kindred. In doing so, our campers have shown a commendable level of self-awareness and empathy and have built a very meaningful rapport with counselors and other campers.

As Darryl reflects on his past year at Kindred, the growth he’s witnessed in our campers stands out as one of the most rewarding aspects of his work. In discussing his experience as Camp Director at Family Camp this year, Darryl said:

“What I enjoyed the most was the interactions that I had with the families. I had meaningful conversations all weekend with caregivers and young people, and to me, that’s what Kindred is about.”

These interactions were the heart of Family Camp. Family Camp provided a space where families could connect, share their experiences, and learn from one another. The joy of seeing families come together, bond over shared activities, and build lasting memories made the experience truly special.
