Zayden Does Capoeira

At Kindred, we provide spaces for campers and staff to share their passions. By building plenty of camper choice time into our schedule, our community finds many ways to share what they love and teach it to others. This emulates one of Project Kindred’s Five Foundations. Joy, as “We share our passion, playfulness, and positivity with one another”.

One way we do this is through Adventures, a space for staff to share their hobbies and passions with our campers. This summer, Counselor G gave the campers the opportunity to learn Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art and game that includes elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. A handful of campers took to this exciting new adventure filled with complex maneuvers involving hands on the ground and inverted kicks. Capoeira was new to Zayden, and after his initial Adventure with G, he spent his free time every day practicing moves and learning new skills.

Two days later, Zayden led his own Camper Club centered on teaching Capoeira. Zayden was immersed in learning and taking to it quite quickly, sharing these new tricks to anyone who would watch. He displayed Kindred’s community values and invited other campers to try, coaching them and cheering them on. With G’s guidance, Zayden gradually began mastering more complicated moves and teaching other campers how to properly balance themselves.

Before camp, Zayden wasn’t familiar with Capoeira. Because of your support, campers like Zayden are able to discover new passions and practice courage!

Give young people a chance to discover new hobbies!
