Morgan’s Journey from Camper to Community Leader
Morgan arrived at Project Kindred at ten years old in 2019. She stepped in with curiosity and caution, unsure of who she would meet or where she would belong. What she found was something she did not yet have the words for. She entered a space where people saw her, affirmed her, and encouraged her to grow. From the beginning, the place felt like community.
She returned every summer. Each year brought something new. New friendships. New confidence. New challenges she moved toward because she knew people believed in her. Over time, she moved from participant to guide. She began supporting younger youth through activities she once experienced herself. That shift marked her start as a leader. It began not with a title, but with how she showed up for others.
Today, Morgan is a senior at Golda Meir High School. The foundation she built at Project Kindred continues to shape her identity as a leader, a student, and a community member. She mentors younger students through the Big Sister program at Golda. She contributes creatively to the yearbook team. She is a varsity cheerleader for Golda and competes on the varsity track team through Riverside High School’s partnership. She is recognized as a UW Madison PEOPLE Scholar. She is preparing for the Pauline Redmond Coggs Foundation Cotillion. She is a committed member of Top Teens of America, a national program that builds leadership, service, and preparation for life after high school.
Her accomplishments tell a story, but the deeper story reflects the confidence, purpose, and leadership she carries with her.
When asked what stands out most in her journey, she did not list awards or achievements. She said:
“This summer was my favorite year because of the leadership I was able to step into. Leading helped me grow. Guiding others helped me see myself. Stepping up showed me I already belonged.”
These words speak to what young people experience when they are supported, challenged, and seen. Morgan continues to grow. She continues to guide others. She continues to build her future with clarity and courage. Her path reflects what many young people across Milwaukee can experience when they enter a space that invites them to lead with confidence and purpose.
