The growth of a community

When 49 campers joined together on a Saturday in December, Kindred spirit filled the air. The Kindred Kickoff, a full day of “camp,” marked the first event of Project Kindred’s year-round program. Current 7th-12th graders enrolled in Project Kindred programming participate in three year-round events ahead of their week of summer camp. Because of the generosity of our community, these events are filled with activities, delicious food, and opportunities to build relationships with peers.

Because Project Kindred’s programs begin with 5th graders, most of the campers attending the Kindred Kickoff knew each other from camp the previous year. One camper, a 7th grader, was brand new to Project Kindred’s programs. He arrived first, eager to jump in and meet new friends. While our staff led icebreaker activities, other campers quickly joined in and began to show him camp traditions, games, and introduce him to their peers. What began as a day of hesitation ended with a massive ear-to-ear smile.

The constant friendliness of Kindred campers is astounding, and new campers are welcomed like old friends. Because of supporters like you, Project Kindred can welcome new campers with open arms and provide an inclusive space for young people to build relationships, connect, and grow together as a community.
